A Power-Packed Session That Helped Future Designers Get Interview-Ready!
On 12th July 2025, the WHY TAP campus in Chennai turned into a vibrant learning hub for aspiring UI/UX designers. The much-awaited masterclass on cracking the UI/UX designer interview brought together energy, curiosity, and hands-on learning in a focused two-hour session—both offline and online.
Tailored specifically for our Full Stack Development students, the workshop aimed to solve one big challenge: How do you face your first design interview with clarity and confidence?
The Purpose Behind the Workshop
The design field is growing rapidly, but so is the competition. And while many learners are well-versed in Figma, Adobe XD, or wireframing, they often freeze during interviews when asked:
- “Walk me through your process.”
- “Why did you choose this layout?”
- “What UX principle influenced this decision?”
These are real interview questions—and knowing how to answer them is just as important as knowing how to design.
This workshop was created to equip students with interview intelligence—that is, the ability to think, speak, and present like a job-ready designer.

UI vs. UX—What’s the Real Difference?
We kicked off the session with one of the most commonly confused concepts: UI vs. UX. Through simple analogies like "UX is the journey, UI is the vehicle," students understood the distinction with ease—and learned how to explain it during interviews.
The 5-Step Design Thinking Process in Action
Using real-world product examples, students explored the design thinking process—a must-know in interviews and job tasks alike:
- Empathize—Understanding user pain points
- Define—Framing the core problem
- Ideate—Generating possible solutions
- Prototype—Creating low/high-fidelity solutions
- Test—Validating with users and improving
This framework wasn’t just taught—it was experienced through interactive exercises.
Top 15+ Interview Questions Answered
Students worked on responding to actual questions, such as:
- Why do you use the tools that you do?
- How do you handle design criticism?
- What’s the most challenging UX problem you’ve solved?
- Can you explain a UX law you follow?
They also learned how to structure answers using STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) and MoSCoW (Must, Should, Could, Won’t) methods—turning nervous mumbles into structured confidence.
Live Mock Interview Session
Perhaps the highlight of the event — a mock interview segment where selected students were asked design questions in real-time. Observers gained valuable insight into how to handle pressure, maintain clarity, and explain thought processes.
Trainers offered instant, constructive feedback, covering everything from body language to terminology usage.
Portfolios & Presentation Tips
An effective portfolio structure for designers was another topic covered in the session. Students learnt how to tell their work stories during interviews, what hiring managers look for, and what mistakes to avoid.
